AAPL: NYTimes, 9To5Mac Spar Over iPhone 5 Rumors

There are some conflicting reports about Apple’s (AAPL) next model of the iPhone in the ether today.

On the one hand, The New York Times’s Nick Bilton late yesterday reported that an Apple staffer says the announcement of an “iPhone 5″ is “just weeks away.”

But 9to5Mac’s Seth Weintraub this morning takes a swipe at Bilton’s story. What Bilton writes is not news, he argues, and there’s more to the story.

According to Weintraub, he’s heard that there are continued design and production delays” with the iPhone 5, which is supposed to feature a more aerodynamic case and larger screen. Weintraub writes that “at least one assembly line” is having problems making the thing, though he cites no sources for the information.

Weintraub also has heard there will be a second new model, a “low-end” device that’s similar to the iPhone 4. He claims the likely release date for these is likely October 7th.

Apple shares today are up $6.31, or 1.6%, at $399.27.
