Top 5 Value Stocks To Invest In 2014

Less than a week after winning a massive $4.8 billion order from the Department of Defense to build 177 CH-47F Chinook heavy lift helicopters for the Army, Boeing (NYSE: BA  ) has won another one.

In a news release last night, DoD announced that it has awarded Boeing a firm-fixed-price, multiyear contract worth up to $3.4 billion for the production of remanufactured and new-build Chinooks. To be clear, this new contract is not the anticipated "option" to buy an additional 38 helos discussed in last week's contract. Rather, this is an entirely new order placed "in support of foreign military sales for Turkey and United Arab Emirates."

What's more, this one could be even bigger as the "optioned" version of the contract let out by the U.S. Army last week. According to DoD, the Turkey/UAE contract has options of its own attached, which, if exercised, could increase the total contract value to just under $5 billion, versus a potential value of roughly $4.8 billion on last week's U.S. Army contract.

Another Dow stock that likely fell on the news from China was Caterpillar (NYSE: CAT  ) , which ended the day down 0.1%. Although today's announcement clearly didn't have a major affect on either caterpillar or Alcoa, it did add fuel to the bearish sentiment investors have had with each company this year. Caterpillar is down 7.24% year to date, while Alcoa has lost 8.06%. These may not seem like massive declines, but when we add in the fact that the Dow itself is up 12.94% in 2013, the idea that Alcoa and Caterpillar have been beaten by nearly 20% over just the past six months is rather shocking.

But sales trends remain abysmal in many parts of the market, especially in the former growth hot-spot of the Asia-Pacific region. Rival Caterpillar (NYSE: CAT  ) has seen sales in the region swing from year-over-year gains as recently as November to declines of 20% or more in each of the past three months. Latin America has been a bright spot for Caterpillar, but otherwise, the rest of the world has seen a substantial slowdown, with overall sales down 13% in April.

This series, brought to you by Yahoo! Finance, looks at which upgrades and downgrades make sense, and which ones investors should act on. Today, we'll be looking at why Caterpillar (NYSE: CAT  ) got its target price cut, while Angie's List's (NASDAQ: ANGI  ) was upped. But first, a quick look at why...

The finance sector, as mentioned, can make money in many ways. The second-highest growth sector is expected to be consumer discretionary, with a 6.2% increase. When you look at earnings from luxury brands like Tiffany & Co. (TIF), and that the hotel sector continues to do very well, it suggests that those people who are in good financial shape are spending their money. Meanwhile, dollar players like Dollar Tree (DLTR) continue to perform very well, suggesting that folks with less money are spending it on cheaper items.

If you're anything like me, two things went through your head when you saw this. First, you regret that you missed out on the investment opportunity. Since the end of 2009, shares in all three of these companies, led by Dollar Tree (NASDAQ: DLTR  ) , have simply trounced the broader market. Even the worst performer of the bunch, Family Dollar (NYSE: FDO  ) , beat it by nearly a factor of two.

Dollar Tree, Inc. (NASDAQ:DLTR) is one of the companies that are set to exploit the ongoing trend of consumers' increasing focus on value with significant opportunity to grow its store base, and expand margins.

I do believe as Wal-Mart gets hurt, the dollar stores will do a little better especially Dollar General (DG), but don overlook Dollar Tree (DLTR). Wall Street is worried about Costco (COST) but I believe it will actually outperform expectations. Costco seems to have figured out how to grow much faster than Wal-Mart and still provide affordable health insurance for most employees.

Advisors' Opinion:

Schlumberger (NYSE: SLB  ) will release its quarterly report on Friday, capping an up-and-down quarter for the stock. With U.S. natural gas prices having risen somewhat from their lows last year and with oil prices remaining above $100 per barrel, Schlumberger earnings have the fundamental support in place to drive higher.

    Where growth will come from
One area that Newell Rubbermaid still has to tap fully is emerging markets. The company has done a good job of expanding overseas, with 17% annual growth in Latin America. But with barely a quarter of its sales coming from outside the U.S. and Canada, the company has a lot further to go. Storage rival Tupperware (NYSE: TUP  ) gets fully 60% of its total revenue from emerging markets, and it too has seen impressive gains in South America as well as the Asia-Pacific region.

  • [By Eric Volkman]

This will be paid on July 8 to stockholders of record as of June 19. That amount matches the firm's previous distribution, which was paid in early April. Prior to that, Tupperware Brands was rather less generous, handing out $0.36 per share.
