Best Blue Chip Companies For 2014

Wall Street seemed happy to get the second quarter -- especially the month of June -- behind it on Monday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJINDICES: ^DJI  ) was up more than 150 points for much of the day after manufacturing data from the U.S. and Japan indicated that global industry is rebounding. Bullish data alone often drives equities higher, but investors anxiously awaiting the beginning of earnings season next week may also contribute to some speculative gains this week. By day's end, the Dow had risen 65 points, or 0.4%, ending at 14,974.

The biggest blue chip beneficiary of Monday's manufacturing rally was United Technologies (NYSE: UTX  ) , which added nearly 2%. Sentiment from Japan's biggest industrials shifted from largely negative to mildly optimistic in June, and that important swing was mirrored in the U.S., where manufacturing activity swung from contraction to expansion.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Michael Brush]

Philip Morris International (PM) has a dividend yield of 3.7%.

This company is the world's second-biggest cigarette seller, after China National Tobacco. Philip Morris International controls the rights outside the United States to such brands as Marlboro, Virginia Slims and Parliament. So it's positioned to sell more cigarettes as smokers in rapid-growth emerging markets earn more and trade up to premium brands.

Insiders continue to buy the stock, suggesting room for further appreciation. And, of course, tobacco's addictive nature assures steady revenue. If you oppose smoking for moral, health or other reasons, this stock is not for you. As an ex-smoker, I'd understand.

When this company talked about lofty EPS for 2015, initially the street was skeptical especially after IBM reported a blah quarter soon after the expectations were laid out. I now think the company has $20 earnings per share capabilities out three years and that $13 is doable for 2011. You keep the multiple the same and you get a $169 stock. I think it does just that. This one's cheap, way too cheap and it will be cheap next year, too, but on a bigger earnings base which is how it can get to my price target.

Temporarily becoming the most valuable company in the world last week, Apple has not been hurt very much by the recent bear market. In fact, for a great read about Apple’s story, consider taking a look at this article. With household names like iPad and iPhone, we all know that Apple is valuable … but the question is how valuable?Answering a question like that isn’t easy, but we believe the answer is up – way up. In fact, when compared to Google (GOOG)’s valuation metrics, this isn’t even that unreasonable. Apple’s price to earnings, price/earnings to growth, and price to sales ratios are 14.91, 0.61, and 3.45 respectively. Google’s numbers in these same categories are 20.34, 0.84, and 5.45 – all much higher. While competitors like Hewlett-Packard (HPQ) and Research in Motion (RIMM) may be a bargain for those hunting sub-8 price to earnings ratios, AAPL is still a good place to be. The most recent news affecting Apple has been Steve Jobs’s crazy new plans for company headquarters, but needless to say this will not have a huge impact on AAPL stock price. What will though is whether the company can keep up its knack for fresh technology that consumers love. While some may call this blind faith, we see it as an investment opportunity. The best time to buy AAPL stock is before their next biggest thing is announced – and that time is right now.

When I think of cash, I think of Apple, a great company that generates tons of the green stuff. Between 2007 and 2011, Apple's net income -- the headline annual profits that most investors focus on -- rose by $22 billion. But over the same period, annual cash flow jumped from $5 billion to $38 billion.

Like geeks lining up for each new iGadget release, Apple investors anxiously awaited the company's first quarterly dividend of $2.65 a share, paid on August 16. The stock yields 1.7% and, despite a seemingly high price of $630.83 a share, it trades at just 12 times estimated earnings per share of $52.50 for the fiscal year that ends in September 2013.
